*There may be blank spots in this review (I haven’t read the book in about a month and a half…and I’ve probably read about 50 other books since then. Not exaggerating!)
Now, first of all, the message at the beginning was a little over dramatic…but than again…I’m overly dramatic as well, but this seemed to be a little overkill. “You’re life could depend on it!” But still, that’s not the point of the book, and it does drag you in. Yes she is part bird, she has wings. As do her “flock.” The part on the back about her “figuring out what she really thinks about Fang” didn’t make much sense except for that one part at the end when she kisses him…otherwise he’s just her right wing man. I love the cookie part, “must have cookies.”
Now, this book is very funny, in some places it seems like the author is trying a little to hard to be funny, but I laughed throughout the whole book, which is rare for me unless I happen to be reading Calvin and Hobbes. Now, to get your attention at the beginning, half wolf-mutants called Erasers attack and kidnap the youngest member, Angel. Angel has been taken to the School, a horrible place where they experiment on people like her.
Now, Angel is my fav character, she’s so……deceptively sweet! And when she was kidnapped I was like: “Well, there’s going to be a rescue missing-RIGHT?! Yes! There is! And just as her name- Maximum Ride (gotta love that name)-promises, it’s a very Maximum Ride from beginning to end! There are mutant fights, and mutant/human fights, and Max/Angel fights! They manage to get Angel back halfway through without too much trouble…sure they get captured first, but they break their way out again pretty fast. Have I mentioned I love Angel? Honestly, my favorite part of the book is when Angel cons a woman into buying her a $49 stuffed bear!
My other favorite part of the book is when Max saves a girl for getting beat up, but gets shot in the process, and then asks the girls mother for help. The girl’s, Ella’s, mother is a vet and her name is Dr. Martinez helps Max and discovers in the process that Max has wings. But instead of immediately trying to turn Max into some kind of public display, she helps her and is really nice, definitely hope we see her in more books!
The chapters from Angel’s point of view at the beginning are heart breaking…but I do have to say one thing, James Patterson can’t do third person well, at least not with these characters. Now, did I mention that these are spoiler (can you tell I like italics?) reviews? I don’t know about any of you guys, but I have to know about books before reading them, and I end up trawling through hundreds of sites trying to find exact details, which, sadly, there are very few of. So here it is SPOILER SECTION (Warning! Put hand over screen, scroll down quickly, or whatever it is you non-spoiler people do):
- Jeb (Their protector, saved them from the School, taught them how to fight, went missing and is presumed dead by the flock.) is alive! And, he’s on the bad side this time. So Max wants revenge…big time.
- Angel discovers she can control minds.
- Jeb’s son, Ari, has been turned into an Eraser and wants to eat Max as lunch and the rest of the Flock as a snacks and side dishes.
- Max gets a voice that helps her make decisions. But not before she gets debilitating headaches that are the Voice settling in….apparently, they’re a little cryptic about that part.
- They find another group of mutants whom they set free and who take off for parts unknown.
- Find info on their parents, but most of it’s in code.
- Angel gets a mutant dog named Total!
- It’s all good in the end! No one important dies and they’re flying off into the sunset! Yay!
And that’s the book, yes that was long…I’m working on being shorter. Cut me some slack, this was my first review in….well, ever! Enjoy the book
